Not Normal is Wanda Sykes’ brand new comedy special on Netflix. She effortlessly slays the crowd with sharp, observational precision skills of a political surgeon.
I first met Wanda 2 years ago at the dolby theater while in Chris Rock’s green room for his Tamborine Netflix special. I remember asking her, “When your Netflix special coming out?” She disappointed stated that she had just put one on Epix. (If you’re saying to yourself, “What is epix?” Then I think you understand why she seemed disappointed. She then told me it would be at least 3 years before her next one.
Here we are, less than 3 years later she knocks it out the park. Wanda proves why her insight is needed. She lets it be known up top, if you’re a Trump supporter then you’re not gonna like this! It’s called Not Normal to emphasize how a lot of the political media and government shenanigans shouldn’t be allowed or accepted. She even goes in on The Bachelor! Saying it makes women look stupid.
We need more strong, black female voices in comedy. I’m not sure how much she got paid, not that it’s any of our business, but she definitely deserves what the big guys are getting and I hope that the Monique/Netflix fiasco last year helped her get what she deserves. I also hope seeing the response Wanda gets, effects the chances of others getting what the deserve as well.
Comedy Mash-Up at The Main in Santa Clarita. I got a chance to headline and dope Mash-up of Stand-Up and Improv. Dan Fowble, Nolan Culver, Eddie Furth and my guy Jay Light all did their thing. We even got in on the Improv fun. My horny Elmo impression was epic.
Love performing at South Point Casino. Honestly, they’ve shown me so much love over the years. I performed at Metropolitan’s foundation room as well earlier that night. The host knows his crowd and tames them well. Gabe, Skillz and Greg ripped this crowd to shreds.
I was disappointed because normally we do a group shot at the end of the show. (I need to take more pics in general.) Any who, it felt really good getting up with my man Skillz Hudson. He was always a comic I admired. Glad he’s killing it in Vegas and I look forward to working with him again soon.
There’s an awesome show at the Virgil ran Naomi Ekperigin and Andy Beckerman called Couples Therapy. I had the opportunity to perform on there with my homie of many years, Taquita Love.
I like the concept of the show. Two friends, not necessarily a “couple”, pretty much do a set together. Some people have dual acts. Some have a song and dance, or one person just tells embarrassing stories about the other. All of this is converted into podcast form.
It was a very interesting and hilarious night. There’s even an artist that sketches you while you’re on stage. (@coyneworks). We got a chance reminisce about the good old days. Naomi and Andy were amazing hosts. Its a must see and must perform for everyone.
Okay, the Dogma show was epic! That was one of the most lit nights ever in the Belly room at the Comedy Store. My biggest regret was not recording it.
David Smalley is an excellent producer and even better comic. As soon as he touched the stage, it lit up in flames. I couldn’t believe all these drunk ass white people were laughing so hard. Especially at my heavy white critical humor. My boys Izak Allen and Frank Castillo did their thing! Jamie Kennedy and Amir K closed it out strong.
Guess that’ll teach me about complaining about the size of my name on a flyer lol
Thursday Nights at the Comedy Store are my favorite. There’s a show in the Belly Room that feel like aided in raising me as a comic.
The energy, the vibe was amazing. Without Nichelle Murdock, Uncle Levi and Maurice King! The room was packed and roaring. I was actually tired from writing all night and just being in go mode all day. I thought I’d be fine but it hit me hard by 11pm. I was exhausted but, I still enjoyed the warmth of being surrounded my comedy family. Its so rare for me to be in the company of Jamal Doman or Cecily Jamila. I’ve lowkey have been knowing these people for 8 to 9 years and it feels like a class reunion.
The new “heartbeat” bill, banning abortion as early as six weeks into pregnancy was passed in Georgia May 7th. Ohio, Kentucky and Mississippi has already done the same with Alabama signing today and Missouri could be next.
This is what’s happening in America right now. Does this look right to you? They just made a decision for a demographic that the vast majority do not reside in nor relate to. I wouldn’t even let them choose the music I listen to. Now do you see why it’s important to and more diversity in Government? DON’T let these white men fool you. They been running shit and still running shit. NOTHING has changed.
I’ll admit, I don’t fully understand the intricities of pregnancy, child birth or abortion. I do believe it should be within a woman’s right to decide how it should be handled. I believe there is a gray area to this conflict but I feel like the bigger picture is that there are people who are actively attempting to take away people’s basic rights and civil liberties.
I always thought
we’ve made quite some progress over the last 50 years but I can’t help but to think this is the result of the Remaking America Great brigade. This isn’t great, it’s sad and if you don’t think so, wait til they start attacking some of the civil liberties you hold near and dear. There’s a bigger agenda here.
As far as I am concerned this is attach to the major conservative push back since 2008. It’s no coincidence that the biggest nation protest in US history was held on the day our president was Inaugurated. Women knew what time it was!
Does the Constitution embrace a woman’s right to terminate her pregnancy by abortion?
Roe v Wade (1973)
7 to 2 Decision
The Supreme Court held that a woman’s right to an abortion fell within the right to privacy (recognized in Griswold v. Connecticut) protected by the Fourteenth Amendment. The decision gave a woman total autonomy over the pregnancy during the first trimester and defined different levels of state interest for the second and third trimesters. As a result, the laws of 46 states were affected by the Court’s ruling.

They are actively trying to get a judgement over-turned from 1973.
Imagine if this works, what’s next? Brown v. Board of Education 1954? Imagine in 2020, you watching the news and find out they brought back segregation. Crazy right? Well…
I tend to weaponize my anxiety sometimes. I realize when my anxiety levels are high, I gain a sense of hyper awareness. I operate very well under stress. I am able to properly delegate while multi-tasking. Most times I can be indecisive, when I kick into high gear, everything is clear. (Didn’t mean to rhyme)
There’s always a victim though. When operating on that plane of intellect, I tend the be very efficient. Efficiency can be an enemy to emotions because, most time doing what’s necessary doesn’t require feelings. I can come off emotionally mute because I try to narrow all options to what pleases the most people at once. It’s not that I don’t care, It’s that I care too much. I see the bigger picture and I attempt to deliver it. The victim never sees it that way, they tend to feel exclusively pushed aside. Which I understand, I always felt “inadequete” or “left out”. Whether intentional or not, I rarely find myself as “the preferred” option. I would never want to make others feel like that.
I realize I have to learn how to solve issue through “more calming” means. Calm comes from proper planning, confidence and relaxation. Meditating is a way to help achieve some level of hyper-awareness. I used to view that as procrastination. Proper planning can be a method of efficiency as well. What’s the point of doing a job well, effectively multi-tasking and displaying proper leadership just to one day lose your mind. The goal is to be great.
It’s all about mental health, mental strength. Don’t let anything (or anyone) be “too much” for you. Take a minute, refocus and then resume where you left off. Ask for help! If your help sucks, fire them then get more help! The point is, keeping a level head is just cooler than over doing it.
My anxiety is not a superpower, its a weakness. My security in who I am and what I am capable of is my strength. I know what I can and can’t handle and I like that.
I am going to bed now…

Okay, alright.. I’ve fought the internet/social media thing long enough.. I have a website! (w/ my own domain name) I need to use it more often.
I miss the days when it was dope to be private online. I always heard, “You should never put your personal info online” now look at us?! Face scanning, amazon/ubering/postmating, chatty patties!! We put it all out there, its just weird to me. Spilling your guts online? Especially to twitter, FB and IG. 🤮 Just so years later it prevents you from hosting the Oscars.
My best friend on AOL back in the day was named SSJ3Gohan. I never truly knew him, he never truly knew me but we spoke everyday. I miss that! I miss the anonymity of my online interactions. Now I feel like every time I post I am making a statement about who I am. I wish to be free of the perception trap that is social media. It sucks because I catch people only remembering things they PERCEIVED ONLINE despite me clarifying in person on multiple occasions. It’s just weird!
I’m learning that the online you is the real you, not the other way around; that’s the real matrix. Perception is reality, especially in 2019.
It’s not 2004 anymore, even though I dress like it. You can be anything you choose to be; you can choose to not exist. I’ll exist on social media for now (because my income depends on it.) As soon as I reach as state of personal and financial comfort, I’m logging off forever.
